Aeromotive Part Number: 66709
Legacy VaporWorx Part Number: SR-1
Voltage boosting a fuel pump can result in a dramatic increase in pump performance.
At VaporWorx we are firm believers that voltage boosting may be an elegant way to meet challenging fuel demands if done properly. Supplying more voltage than needed may be hard on pumps, controllers, electrical systems, etc. As a rule-of-thumb, a 1v change at the fuel pump will result in a 15% change in pump performance. Below is a Gen5 ZL1 fuel module with a 2.2v increase netting a +30% output increase.
This controller will change the output voltage of the JMS FuelMax voltage booster automatically based on the output duty cycle of the OEM Fuel System Control Module or VaporWorx PWM controller. Unlike voltage ramping methods that rely on MAP, spark, TPS, or other methods, the SmartRamp only increases voltage to the pump(s) when needed. Hence, the voltage to the pump(s) is minimized to only what is needed to meet the commanded fuel pressure.
For example, a MAP based voltage increasing arrangement will produce the same voltage output if the engine is at 2000RPM/5psi or 6000RPM/5psi. However, the 2000RPM condition likely does not need increased voltage. It would be best not to have the voltage increased in this condition.
The VaporWorx SmartRamp only looks at the output duty cycle of the FSCM or VaporWorx PWM controller. Once the output duty cycle becomes high, the SmartRamp feeds the appropriate signal to the JMS FuelMax to increase voltage. Only enough voltage increase is provided to meet the commanded fuel pressure. Hence, the voltage increase occurs on a true on-demand basis.
Most OEM FSCM will produce MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) codes if their input voltage goes over 16.5v. It is suggested to use the settings supplied with the SmartRamp as the base setting and make adjustments as needed. VaporWorx PWM controllers can accept up to 22v, but this will be difficult to achieve on high-power pumps with any voltage booster.
Connections are straightforward with just two wires to the car and one wire to the JMS FuelMax. No MAP connections, Hobb's switches, etc. are needed. The FSCM and/or VaporWorx PWM must have the Pump+ be the pulsed circuit. If a negative pulse system is needed, please contact Aeromotive.
