Drag Week Day 3 – Amarillo, TX to Tulsa, OK
Day 3 got off to a rough start. 3 auto parts stores looking for an odd power steering pump and a pulley puller and installer. We did make it to the track before noon though. PS Pump installed, collector gaskets replaced, suspension greased and then it was off to Tulsa. 406 miles to be exact. We ran this leg hard and fast arriving in Oklahoma around 8:30 pm, our earliest arrival yet. What a great trip so far. A lot of good people came out in all the small towns to see the cars of Drag Week roll through. The cool weather made for easy trips and very little issues for guys on the side of the road. However, according to Hot Rod, Drag Week has claimed 25 cars so far. 25 cars that can no longer continue this journey. Read more here: http://www.hotrod.com/dragweek/2011/day_3_amarillo_texas/

Drag Week Day 2 – Great Bend, KS to Amarillo, TX

Drag Week Day 2 is in the books. Great racing in Great Bend and an amazing spectator turn out for a Tuesday morning. The unlimited cars had their problems with the exception being Larry Larson who cranked out a 7.17. We had our work cut out for us from the moment we drove into the track. We were bombarded with fuel system questions and problems right up until we peeled out of there for Amarillo. But with every car, we were able to get them fixed up and running. Most of the issues were related to simple plumbing problems which eventually led to some sort of failure. We brought enough line and filters with us that most guys could replumb, get the right filters and the right place and head down the road. Always great to see those guys blowing down the highway later in the day. From what I heard from the Hot Rod staff, several guys never left Great Bend with because of fuel system questions. Too bad they didn’t come see us!

Drag Week Day 1 – Test ‘n Tune, Kick Off Party and Topeka to Great Bend
Well… Day 1 is in the books. Surprise, surprise, Larry Larson is your overall leader after 1 day of racing. But, by only a hundredth of a second. The Terzich/Lutz team is nipping at his heels. We rolled into Great Bend around 11 pm. What a trip. As a first timer, I must say, this is intense. It is a matter of endurance and survival for sure. Alot of guys fighting fuel system issues along the way. Fortunately for all of them, the problems were simple plumbing errors and could be fixed on the side of the road. We snapped some pics of the unfortunately souls and the carnage. See for your self.

Our Ride
We’ll be tracking along in our 1956 Bel Air. Originally restored several years ago by Jared Cox, Aeromotive technician. When we decided to do Drag Week several months ago, we thought now would be a good time to make some upgrades to the car. Before we bagan the upgrades, the car sat on 17” rims and tires and got its aggressive stance from 2” drop springs and 2” drop spindles. However, this did not make for great handling or safe touring for that matter. The car tracked all over the road and ran through tires quickly. So, we contacted our friends at Ridetech and went with a complete coil-over suspension. We figured while we’re at it, we did a Ford 9” conversion. That change forced us to make some braking upgrades as well. So, SSBC came to the rescue with a full set of tri-power brakes. See the install photos below. Next was a new set of shoes wrapped around Weld Racing RT-S wheels.

Here is a quick breakdown of the specs:
383 stroker Small Block Chevy
ProCharger C2 Supercharger & Blow-Off Valve
Edelbrock Air Gap Intake
830 Quickfuel blow-through Carbureto
MSD Ignition
Autometer Gauge
Flaming River Column
Grant Steering Whee
Pontiac Bonneville Interior
700r4 OD Transmission
Ford 9” Rear
13” SSBC Tri-Power Brakes
SSBC Master Cylinder
Weld Racing RT-S Wheel: 18×8 Front 20×9 Rear
Hankook Tires
